Appendix 1a: Checklist for Applicants (U.S. Students)

This checklist is intended as a general guide. Please refer to the Graduate Catalog for the most updated requirements and deadlines.

Required Application Materials for Admission

You may apply on-line by going to www.mtsu.edu/graduate. In order to complete your application, you will need to submit the following materials through the Graduate Student Portal:

_____Application fee

_____Transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended.

_____Three letters of recommendation

_____GRE scores, Ph.D. only (We look primarily at the Verbal and Analytical portions of the General exam; the English subject test, though not required, is recommended.)

_____A short statement of purpose (500 words or so) in which you present your reasons for wishing to pursue graduate studies in English (your professional plans, areas of interest, etc.) as well as any relevant experience that prepares you for graduate studies.

_____A writing sample of 2000-5000 words for applicants to the M.A. program, 3000-5000 words for applicants to the Ph.D. program.

_____Certificate of Immunization Form submitted to Health Services (required for all full-time students).

_____The deadline for application without assistantship for Fall admission only is March 1.

_____The deadline for application for Spring admission only is October 1.

Required Application Materials for Graduate Assistantship

If you would like to be considered for a graduate assistantship, in addition to the material required for the general application, you will need to fill out an application for an assistantship and submit it online.

_____Application for Graduate Assistantship

_____Copy of 500-word statement of purpose from general application materials.

_____The deadline for application for a graduate assistantship is February 1.
