13 Cognate Option
Ph.D. students may elect to take 6 to 9 credit hours of graduate courses in a field related to their area of specialization (such as History or Literacy Studies) if permitted by that department. The cognate must be declared to the Graduate Advisor or Graduate Program Director and may be considered electives in the 48 hours of required coursework in English for the degree. Note: Other departments may require a methods course in their discipline in order for English Ph.D. students to take their graduate courses.
