Master’s Program Requirements
Students in the M.A. program in English may choose one of four Emphases designed to fulfill different educational and career goals or they may choose an Open Plan. M.A. candidates must complete a minimum of 30 hours (thesis option) or 33 hours (directed portfolio option) in one of these four emphases or the Open Plan. (Please note that the Emphases are guides for course selections and will not be specifically indicated on the transcript.)

- Literary Studies
- Language and Writing Studies
- Teaching Writing and Literature
- Popular Culture/Cultural Studies
- Open Degree Plan
Students are strongly encouraged to consult with the Graduate Advisor in planning their course of study and to save all graded papers for all of the courses they take, especially if they are considering the portfolio option.
