Program Overview

8 General Education Writing Awards (GEWA)

The General Education Writing Awards are administered by the General Education English Department with support of the Peck Fund. Student essays from English 1009, 1010, 1020, 2020 and 2030 in the summer, fall, or spring semester are eligible. The student’s essay must be nominated by the faculty member for whom the essay was written. Winning essays are published in the General Education Magazine (GEM).

For application requirements and the required cover sheet, students must visit the General Education English office (PH 324).

GTA Responsibilities for GEWAs

GTA Reflection Groups will choose the GEWA winners from the nominees. Course categories will be divided among the Reflection Groups. Each group is asked to work together to read and evaluate each nomination in their assigned category, provide feedback for each nominee, then compose a few sentences of (encouraging) rationale for their top three picks.

GTAs may submit their students’ essays for GEWAs.
