ENGL 1010: Expository Writing

26 ENGL 1010K

Sometimes it is recommended that students take “Prescribed Courses,” which focus on providing extra support in challenging areas. These courses have a “K” in the section number. In ENGL1010K, students might be required to complete additional hours of coursework outside of class by attending certain kinds of activities — for instance, some of the upcoming events offered by the Center for Fairness, Justice, and Equity in the College of Education. Traditionally, students are placed into ENGL 1010K if they have an 18 ACT score or lower. However, we recognize that standardized test scores are just one measure of student ability and not necessarily predictive of student success in college. Further, many students may benefit from this supported version of ENGL1010. Students who wish to appeal their placement by ACT or who do not have current test scores can take our Guided-Self Placement survey to see which course is right for them.

Below we have provided example text from an ENGL 1010K syllabus. This will help you get a sense of some of the extra opportunities suggested for 1010K sections.

ASYNCHRONOUS WORK REQUIREMENT (ON SYLLABUS)

This is a prescribed section of ENGL 1010, which means that we have the course set up slightly differently to ensure your success. The goal is that you learn and develop as a writer, reader, and student here at MTSU. So that this goal is met, you are required to complete one additional hour of coursework outside of our class meeting times (asynchronous work). In D2L, there is a list of campus- and English-related activities designed to improve your academic literacy. Each week, you are to (1) pick any of the activities to complete on your own and then (2) post to the week’s D2L discussion board about your experience. Make sure you complete at least one a week so that you don’t fall behind!

ASYNCHRONOUS ACTIVITY OPTIONS (ON D2L)

As prescribed courses, ENGL 1010K sections are required to have an added hour per week of tasks outside of regular class time. And this is how we will run with that added hour: Below is a list of tasks designed to help you navigate MTSU and better prepare you as a student and a writer. You are to pick one from the list to complete each week. After you’ve completed it, you will write about what you learned/took away from the experience in the week’s D2L Discussion Board.
