Sample sUAS Remote Pilot Certification Syllabus

Description

This course is designed to prepare the student to take the FAA Remote Pilot Aeronautical Knowledge test. Topics will include: regulations, airspace classification and operating procedures, weather, loading and performance, and small unmanned aircraft operations. FAA Remote Pilot Certificate must be completed during this course at student expense.

Objectives and Outcomes

Objectives and outcomes for this course are based on knowledge requirements outlined in FAA-S-ACS-10A Remote Pilot – Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Certification and Recurrent Knowledge Testing) Airman Certification Standards (ACS). The goal of the airman certification process is to ensure the applicant possesses knowledge consistent with the privileges of the Remote Pilot Certificate with a small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) rating, as well as the ability to manage the risks of flight in order to act as a remote pilot-in-command (PIC).

The FAA recognizes that safe operations in today’s complex National Airspace System (NAS) require a more systematic integration of aeronautical knowledge and risk management. The FAA further recognizes the need to more clearly calibrate knowledge and risk management to the level of the Remote Pilot Certificate with an sUAS rating.

The ACS integrates the elements of knowledge and risk management in 14 CFR part 107 for a Remote Pilot Certificate with an sUAS rating. It thus forms the comprehensive standard for what an applicant must know and consider to successfully completing each Task tested on the knowledge test.

At the conclusion of the course, the student will demonstrate knowledge of the following objectives by obtaining an FAA Remote Pilot certificate:

UA.I.A To determine that the student is knowledgeable in the general regulatory requirements of 14 CFR parts 89 and 107.
UA.I.B To determine that the student is knowledgeable of the operating rules of 14 CFR parts 89 and 107, the registration rules of 14 CFR parts 47 and 48, and other associated operating requirements.
UA.I.C To determine that the student is knowledgeable in the requirements associated with remote pilot certification with an sUAS rating.
UA.I.D To determine that the student is knowledgeable of the FAA waiver policy and requirements.
UA.I.E To determine that the student is knowledgeable of the operating rules of 14 CFR parts 89 and 107, and the associated operating requirements when operating over people.
UA.I.F To determine the student exhibits satisfactory knowledge associated with operating rules of 14 CFR part 89 and their associated operating requirements.
UA.II.A To determine that the student is knowledgeable in airspace classification
UA.II.B To determine that the student is knowledgeable of airspace operational requirements.
UA.III.A To determine that the student is knowledgeable in sources of weather information.
UA.III.B To determine that the student is knowledgeable of the effects of weather on performance.
UA.IV.A To determine that the student is knowledgeable in the loading and performance of an sUAS
UA.V.A To determine that the student is knowledgeable in radio communication procedures.
UA.V.B To determine that the student is knowledgeable in airport operations.
UA.V.C To determine that the student is knowledgeable in sUAS emergency procedures.
UA.V.D To determine that the student is knowledgeable in aeronautical decision-making.
UA.V.E To determine that the student is knowledgeable in the physiological factors affecting remote pilot performance.
UA.V.F To determine that the student is knowledgeable in sUAS maintenance and inspection procedures.

Topics

The course is designed to present aeronautical knowledge areas listed in Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 107 Small Unmanned Aircraft Regulations. Each  aeronautical knowledge area is covered within a Learning Module. Further, each learning module is broken down into Topics which cover the tasks listed in FAA-S-ACS-10B Remote Pilot – Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Certification and Recurrent Knowledge Testing) Airman Certification Standards.

Assessment and Grading

Quizzes/Exams

This course will include five (5) quizzes and one (1) final exam Part 107 Knowledge test (fee required) that will cover topics presented in the Learning Modules. Quizzes will be taken during class at the location designated by the instructor. Prior permission from the instructor is required to complete a quiz from another location. Students that take a quiz from an unauthorized location will receive a grade of zero for that quiz.  Be sure to check the course schedule for dates and times for the quizzes.

The final exam will be the FAA Remote Pilot knowledge test administered through PSI Services. To successfully complete the course, you must complete the Unmanned Aircraft General (UAG) knowledge test with a minimum score of 70% and submit a digital copy of your Airman Knowledge Test Results (AKTR) to Dropbox. The test must be taken at an FAA approved Knowledge Testing Center. The FAA Remote Pilot knowledge test can be taken at any time during the course. Ensure that you submit a copy of the test results in Dropbox so your Final Exam grade can be entered. See the Weekly Course Schedule for the deadline to submitting your test results. Test results not received by the deadline will result in a grade of F.  For additional information on the requirements for the Remote Pilot Certificate visit Become a Drone Pilot

Grading Scale

Assignment of letter grades is based on a percentage of points earned. The letter grade will correspond with the following percentages achieved.  All course requirements must be completed before a grade is assigned. DO NOT contact your instructor asking for a better grade if you are just below the higher tier.
