The Gen Ed Magazine (The GEM) is an open-access publication space where the General Education English Program at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) showcases the previous winners of the True Blue Core English Awards each year. Awarded in four categories, the True Blue Core Awards (formerly the Gen Ed Writing Awards, or GEWAs) honor the best and brightest submissions in each of the General Education English courses at MTSU.

GEM Organization

The GEM is organized by award year (e.g., 2021) and award category (e.g., ENGL 1010). Under each award year, you’ll find four categories that contain award-winning essays:

  1. ENGL 1010: Expository Writing
  2. ENGL 1020: Research and Argumentative Writing
  3. ENGL 2020/2030: Sophomore-level Literary Analysis
  4. ENGL 1010, 1020, 2020, 2030: Multimodal Composition
  5. ENGL 1010, 1020, 2020, 2030: Creative Writing (new in 2023)
