Getting started

This textbook was developed for the SW 4050/5050 Introduction to Substance Use and Misuse course at Middle Tennessee State University. It is hosted on Pressbooks as a free, open-access resource. No account or login is required to read. Simply open the link your instructor shared, or go directly to the textbook at any time.

Inside a Chapter

What each chapter contains

Most chapters follow the same structure. The elements below appear throughout, though not every chapter carries every one.

Student Learning Outcomes
What you should be able to do after working through the chapter. Each chapter also names the broader course objective or objectives it supports, so you can see how the individual chapter fits the course as a whole.
CSWE Competencies Addressed
The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) sets the accreditation standards for social work programs in the United States. Its 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards define nine core competencies that every accredited program must teach, covering areas such as ethical practice, human rights and justice, engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation. Each chapter lists the competencies its content genuinely develops. If you are studying social work, this shows how the chapter connects to your program requirements. If you are in nursing, public health, criminal justice, counseling, or another discipline, the competencies still describe the professional capacities the chapter builds, and you can read them as a statement of what the chapter is trying to teach.
Supplementary Reading, Viewing, and Resources
Optional material that extends the chapter. It appears in selected chapters as a callout within the text, placed beside the material it supports rather than collected at the end. These readings and videos are not required to understand the chapter, but they deepen it. Your instructor may assign some of them.
Summary
A recap of the chapter section by section, drawing the main points back together before the closing material.
Key Terms
A collapsible glossary toward the end of each chapter, listed alphabetically, defining the concepts introduced in that chapter.
Where This Leads
A short closing note connecting the chapter to the ones that follow, so the sequence of the book stays visible as you move through it.
Further Reflection
A short set of open-ended questions at the end of each chapter. They have no single correct answer. They ask you to apply what the chapter covered to practice situations, to your own assumptions, and to the systems you will work within.
Attributions
A statement of where the chapter came from. Chapters adapted from openly licensed material name the source and its license; chapters written for this book say so directly.
Bibliography
Every source cited in the chapter, in APA style, collapsed behind a “Show references” link so it stays out of your way until you need it.

Navigation

Moving through the content

Previous & Next arrows
At the bottom of every page, use the Previous and Next arrows to move forward or backward through the book in order.
Table of Contents
Use the Table of Contents to jump directly to any module or chapter. It is accessible from the menu in the top navigation bar.
Search
Use the search icon in the top navigation bar to search for any term across the full text, which is useful when reviewing for exams or tracking down a concept.
Expandable sections
Some content is placed in expandable panels to keep each page clear and easy to scan. You can spot them by the plus sign on the right side of a heading, such as Key Terms or the Bibliography. Select the heading or the plus sign to open a panel and view the material inside, and select it again to close it. Whenever a heading shows a plus sign with no text beneath it, expand it to reveal the information that belongs to that section.
Mobile access
The textbook is fully mobile-friendly. The Table of Contents collapses to a menu icon on phones and tablets, and content adjusts automatically to your screen.
