Quel âge avez-vous? Quel âge as-tu?
In this video, we see people say how old they are. All the way to 100 years old!
Now, before we move ahead, a note on the verb, avoir, in the idiomatic expression “Jai XX ans”
Examples
Le verbe avoir – to have (notice there are three possible translations into English)
J’ai – I have, I do have, I am having
Tu as – You have, you do have, you are having
Il/elle/iel/on a – He, she, one has, does have, is having
Nous avons – We have, we do have, we are having
Vous avez – You have, you do have, you are having
Ils/Elles ont – They have, they do have, they are having

(Notice the idiomatic use of “to have”. Literally, I have 22 years. Compare this to the English: I am 22. What differences do you see?)

Remember we mentioned briefly in the first module that in the past the French celebrated their saint’s feast day. Nowadays, in a country of people of many names, faiths and cultures, that tradition has been replaced by a recognition of birthdays to celebrate. Joyeux anniversaire! Here is a quick song to help you memorize the question: Quelle est la date de ton anniversaire? First note the extra letters on Quelle. The interrogative adjective agrees with ‘la date’ the feminine noun. You can’t hear the difference between quel/quelle (except in poetry). This song will help you learn the days of the month as well.
Quelle est la date de votre anniversaire? Réponse: C’est (le 4 avril, deux mille trois.)
