ENGL 2020: Themes in Literature and Culture

38 2020: Sample Writing Projects

Below you will find sample ENGL 2020 writing projects. When deciding on assignment design, consider the purpose of each project. The unit breakdown and subsequent sample projects provided are also meant to be open to adaptation. You may design and organize the units as relevant for your course. Please refer back to the 2020: Course Objectives & Curriculum Summary page to incorporate the corresponding objectives to your specific assignments.

Also, it is important to keep in mind that the True Blue Core program requires that all faculty incorporate one “Signature Assignment (or Assessable Assignment)” that meets all of the course objectives for assessment purposes. There must be one assignment that is designed in a manner that shows evidence of all the True Blue Core objectives being reached. This assessment is done periodically outside of our department by the True Blue Core Program. Instructors will be notified by email with instructions about this process.

Sample Signature Assignments

ENGL 2020 courses can follow a wide scope of literary themes and ideas, which allows for flexibility and creativity in the types of possible assignments. Nonetheless, each course must include one Signature Assignment featuring all True Blue Core course objectives (copied below for convenience):

  • Explore how literature reflects, informs, and shapes both personal and collective experience
  • Articulate cogent responses to literature that demonstrate cultural awareness and understanding
  • Reflect on how reading, writing, and interpreting literature initiates and contributes to cultural and social conversations
  • Examine how the production and interpretation of literature is shaped by historical, cultural, and social contexts
  • Analyze how literature from different cultures, movements, and time periods employ narrative and stylistic strategies to convey complex ideas and meanings
  • Compose projects (written, digital, or audio) that utilize critical thinking, analysis, and research to situate literature within diverse cultural and conceptual frameworks
  • Identify connections between literature and the values, experiences, and practices of multiple cultures
  • Develop an approach to reading, writing, and interpretation that demonstrates an understanding of human experience from multiple cultural vantage points

The following projects are additional examples of ENGL 2020 assignments that include each of the True Blue Core course objectives and thus qualify as True Blue Core assessable assignments.
